We will begin the course with Maurice Sendaks famous book, "Where the Wild Things Are" in order to create your own wild things. Sock puppets, a traveling landscape and creatures will be made. Other books, which we will explore include "Shhh, Open the Flaps but Don't Wake the giant!!" & "We're Going on a Bear Hunt." By making drawings, paintings and puppets, this course will bring classic children's books to life and give students a chance to create their own interpretations.

Drawing and Painting for the Young Artist

This class is designed to give the young, elementary student foundations of drawing and painting in an approach that meets the needs of this age group. The art elements value, space and texture will be introduced in the drawing lessons. Color theory will be explored through painting in addition to teaching proper use and care of brushes. Lessons will be designed in a manner that will allow for each child's individual, creative expression.

Porcelain Doll Making

Students will go through the entire creating process to make a porcelain doll. The class will include mold pouring, facts on firing and the vitrification process, cleaning and sanding bisque pieces, assembling and painting a doll from beginning to end. Each student will go home with a completed doll 12" sleeping baby doll with porcelain head, hands and feet and a cloth bean bag body. This class is perfect for making a one-of-a-kind holiday gift for someone very special!

Watercolor Basics

Discover how watercolor painting can produce some fascinating results by understanding how the paper, pigment and water react together. We will start by learning some basic watercolor techniques such as blended washes, wet-into-wet, resists, scraping, lifting and dry brush. Then we will apply these techniques as we create a still life, landscape and florals.

Stupid Sock Creatures
$40/ One Day Workshop, 4 hours (For those with moderate to advanced hand-sewing experience.)

Join us and bring a friend for a fun afternoon project! Based on John Murphy's book of the same name, we will be making the classic......... Genevieve! "A Stupid Sock Creature" she is .... but oh-so-charming and irresistible. She's made from one pair of socks, buttons and stuffing. You will leave the workshop with a new friend and a recipe to make many more! All you need is one pair of new or recycled crew socks (socks with a ribbed fold-over cuff OR socks that come at least 4 inches above the ankle) per student, old buttons, needles, thread, and even an old pillow as stuffing.
Look for additional adornments you might have around the house. We will provide chopsticks to serve as the spine and extra stuffing.

Introduction to Oil Painting

This class provides a comprehensive introduction to basic drawing skills. Students learn about composition, proportion, perspective, contour, light and shadow. Emphasis will be on the techniques of creating volume and space, and the effects of light and shadow on a two-dimensional picture plane. As students become familiar with the principles of drawing, they develop the confidence they need to improve their skills.

Experimental Techniques With Acrylics
$175/ Two Day Workshop, 6 hours each

Teaching Artist: Cynthia Groya
Exploring acrylics and mediums using innovative techniques, will get you excited about incorporating new ideas into your art. Students will leave this workshop with at least four mixed media paintings perfect for holiday gift giving. Class will combine short discussions about the properties of the mediums with demonstrations of various techniques, followed by demonstrations and exploration of the demonstrated techniques. Combining techniques, layering, creating and applying acrylic skins will all be demonstrated. (Acrylic 'skins' are layers of acrylic applied (creatively!) to a separate Plexiglas surface and then removed and applied to the existing acrylic surface using gels, etc. Experimenting is the key!) Discussion and critiques at the end of each day will provide time for assessment and feedback. (We will break 1/2 hr. each day for lunch). Teacher will send out a short supply list prior to class. (Most supplies are included in course fee).

Basic Oil Painting – "I REALLY don't know how to paint" - part 2

This class is perfect for the student who has always wanted to try oil painting or hasn't
painted in years and wants to get started again. Our beginning oils class will be presented with a fine arts appreciation. All the basics will be covered; materials, technique, color, form, value and critique. We will work on a simple still life or landscape. On the first day bring a drawing pad and charcoal. An additional supply list will be forwarded.

Beginning Pastel

This class will introduce the student to the use of pastel by imparting knowledge of hard, medium, and soft pastels on various papers. The six different pastel techniques will be presented. Color theory and composition will be covered while working on still life setups. We will work in a different pastel technique each week in order to learn pastel painting. Previous drawing experience is necessary.

Advanced Pastel

This class is for the more advanced student with experience in drawing and painting. We will focus on color theory, composition, and different pastel techniques. We will paint from still life setups emphasizing chromatic and physical composition while working with a different technique each week. The goal in this class will be for each student to find his or her "voice" by choosing the pastels, paper, and technique desired.

Beginning Printmaking

Learn techniques of printmaking by using plant materials such as leaves,seeds, fruit, flowers, etc. Greeting cards, prints for frames and printing on tote bags will be explored. Prints will be made on various papers and other materials. No previous experience needed.

- Colleen Attara
- is an eco artist who uses repurposed materials in her work. She has formed partnerships with local sign shops and plastic fabricators and turns their scrap plastics and old signs into colorful, 3-dimensional works of art. Her work is in many private collections and businesses, and is shown in several area galleries. Colleen's green art has been featured in local and national publications as well as on PBS-TV. Colleen creates full time and serves on the Board of the Artists of Yardley. She loves teaching students how to color outside the lines.
- Patrick Bartal
- is an art educator in the School District of Phila., in his 3rd year of teaching Visual Art to inner city youths. He is also an avid oil and watercolor painter. Patrick studied at West Chester University. He later studied at Moore College of Art and Design in a Post Baccalaureate Art Education Certification program. He became certified by the state of PA in the area of Art Education, K – 12. Patrick has also been educating youths, since 2005, in the Yardley area with both CAPS and Artist's Circle organizations.
- Bonnie Batres
- "Teaching children has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Fond memories include: designing a maze out of card board boxes with my younger brother; teaching elementary school children how to swim at LMT pool; coordinating an elementary school girls club that taught morals and values such as honesty; mentoring teenage girls; and teaching my three boys (currently 5, 7 and 9-years-old). Currently I teach computer graphics to continuing education students at Bucks County Community College and design web sites for varies companies and organizations. Earning a BS in Biology and a BA in Integrative Arts at Penn State has enabled me to experiment with many mediums; my favorites are computer graphics, oil painting and woodworking."
- Denise Callanan-Kline
- grew up in a family of stained glass artists. After earning a BS in art education from Temple University, she taught art for several years in public school. Upon receiving her MA from Arcadia University, She taught art at Holy Family University. She also began a decorative painting business specializing in murals and faux finishes. The past few years, her focus has turned to landscape and genre painting. She has taught art to students of all ages. Her paintings have been exhibited throughout Bucks County.
- Jean Childs Buzgo
- is an oil painter, art teacher and packaging/graphic designer. Jean received her BFA at The College of New Jersey and graduated with honors. Over the last 3 years, she has been studying oil painting with various professional painters in the area and is realizing success exhibiting in local galleries. She is also currently teaching art classes to 1–6 year old children at Montessori Cottage preschool and children ages 4–8 over the summer at the Bucks County Racquet Club. Jean's studio and residence are in Bucks County, PA where she lives with her husband and 2 children.
- Renee Egan
- is an avid oil painter. She started her education at Pair School of Art in Connecticut and received her BFA at the College of New Jersey. She continues to take graduate courses at The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and The University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Renee has done many residential murals and wall treatments in Bucks County and New Jersey. She has taught secondary art in New Jersey schools for over ten years and currently teaches Art III, AP and Ceramics II Art programs at Ewing High School in New Jersey. She is a member of The Artists of Yardley and Art Bridge. Not only does she continue to work on ceramics at the Earth Center for the Arts in Newtown, Pa., she shows her paintings regularly in local juried shows and galleries.
- John Ennis
- is a nationally recognized portrait artist. His work is included in prominent collections throughout the United States and abroad. John has received 17 national and international awards, 12 of these from the Portrait Society of America. The subject of numerous magazine articles, he was interviewed for an article on portraiture in the May 2009 issue of the Artist's Magazine. John also authored articles for this publication as well as the International Artist Magazine. John's art studies began at age twelve and have continued throughout his life. After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute, College of Art, he moved to New York City to study painting at the Art Students League of New York. He considers this a seminal moment in his career, taking classes with painters whose art training had been passed down through generations of teachers dating back to the French Academy of the nineteenth century.
A native of Bucks County, PA, John is a member of the Portrait Society of America, the Philadelphia Sketch Club, and the Artists of Yardley. He enjoys the camaraderie of the Bucks County artist community, often painting with friends from live models or the landscape.
- Joan Feiss
- When the Naval Air Center in Warminster, PA, closed the base in 1996 Joan found herself out of a job at the age 63. Having always loved to paint, and having had training as a young girl, Joan decided to apply for a retraining grant. Obtaining this grant, Joan went back to school and graduated with a fine arts degree. Returning to school in her later years has brought many blessings to Joan and enriched her life greatly. Today Joan has a wonderful life as an artist and teacher of watercolor, pastel, oil, drawing, and color theory. Her work is shown widely in juried as well as member shows. Many of her paintings have won awards. She is associated with the Canal Gallery in Washington Crossing, PA. Each painting Joan does excites her greatly as she continues to explore painting in all areas. Her life as an artist and a teacher is full and rewarding and has brought her true happiness.
- Oz Freedgood
- has many years of teaching experience. He taught arts and crafts to children at the Santa Ana Pueblo in New Mexico. He also taught at Cooper Union and was an assistant painting teacher in Parsons School of Design in New York. He has exhibited in various juried shows, and one man shows in Pennsylvania, Washington D.C. and Massachusetts.
- Anne Gannon
- was educated at the School of Visual Arts in NYC. She worked as an Illustrator for Hammacher Schlemmer - her drawings were published weekly in The New York Times and Wall Street Journal. She also designed artwork for Merrill Lynch and Wall Street firms. In 2003, Anne started teaching art classes while beginning a new career as a surrealist and an abstract painter. She has been with the AOY since their inception in 2004, serving as a board member, the website manager and
assistant editor for the AOY newsletter.
- Jackie Greco
- received her BFA from West Chester University. During the fall of 2008, she had a four month emersion into the Italian culture and studio arts in Florence, Italy. Jackie brings her experience from teaching art camps at West Chester University and Chesterbrook Academy. In addition to curricular activities, Jackie has supported fundraisers and volunteered on building sites for Habitat for Humanity. She is very excited to offer her youth, energy and talent to the young artists of Yardley.
- Diane Greenberg
- is an award-winning artist with a BA in Art (concentration: Drawing) and an associates degree in Textile Design. She has designed rugs, home furnishings, fabrics, and wallpaper. Currently, she is concentrating on fine arts, pet portraits, and teaching art.
- Cynthia Groya
- has a BFA from Drake University, taught Art in the Basic Curriculum at the St. Louis Art Museum, Continuing Education at BCCC, Middle School art at Newtown Friends School and Founded CAPS! (Cultural Arts in Progress!) where she directed all programming and taught for 10 years. Groya currently paints full time, is a member of the MUSE Gallery in Philadelphia, volunteers as a coach for the Trenton Soup Kitchen's "SHARE" spoken word and performing arts program, and serves on the FORUM committee of the Phillips Mill Community Association.
- Jody Lista-Malloy
- has been designing dolls for more than 15 years. A gifted seamtress, she worked for Franklin Mint Doll Company creating detailed costumes from sketches for dolls such as Princess Grace, Jackie O, and The Wizard of Oz. Jody loves to pour molds and fire her own dolls in her kiln creating dolls of all types from 4-inch kewpies to 21-inch Santas.
- Susan Mitrano
- received a BFA cum laude from Syracuse University with a major in graphic design and a minor in photography. She enjoyed a 15-year career as a designer and art director in the advertising industry with clients such as AT&T and Kraft. During a career break, she discovered her love of watercolors and has been painting since 1999, studying with Robert O’Brien, AWS in Vermont and others locally. A native of central New Jersey, her early private training included pastels, pen and ink and acrylics. Now a frequently requested substitute art and classroom teacher in the Hopewell area, Susan is completing a second degree in Art Education at The College of New Jersey. She recently received a merit scholarship from the New Jersey Art Educators Association and will be presenting at their annual conference this fall.
- Patricia Newdeck
- has a devoted interest in both our natural environment and art. After obtaining her Geology degree, she worked as environmental consultant, cleaning up soil and groundwater at industrial sites. As an artist, Patricia sculpts bas-relief stoneware tiles and copper foil panels. Patricia's passion for science and art enables her to cultivate the skills inherent in both science and art; a sensitivity to ones environment, keen observation skills and patience. She believes learning happens best when you get dirty.
- Jo-Ann Osnoe
- holds a BFA from Parson’s School of Design and is celebrated for her watercolor work. She moves effortlessly from still life to landscape to florals and local scenes. Expanding recently into oil painting, she has gained recognition in this medium as well, winning First Place in a recent Bucks County art competition. She finds inspiration in nature and her Bucks County surroundings, where she has made her home for the past fifteen years. A dedicated and focused artist, she has exhibited in over one hundred local group shows, including over a dozen juried regional and national exhibitions.
- Smita Rao
- has work that has been exhibited at numerous major venues, including juried shows at the Woodmere and Berman Museums, the Perkins and Abington Centers, and several galleries. Smita Rao's art has drawn a loyal following. Her work is displayed in private collections, business centers, and public institutions. She has won several awards and has been featured in area art newspaper sections.
- Rachel Sherman
- is a graduate of Moore College of Art with a BFA in Textile Design. She launched "malagueta", her clothing design label, in 2002. Her vibrant, modern and easy wear creations have found their way into independent boutiques on the east and west coasts. She has also established herself in the handmade scene through local fine art festivals and craft shows.
- Rose Marie Strippoli
- After raising a family (four children) and operating her own bridal and design business for many years, Rose Marie decided to focus on one of her first loves, painting, in late 1989. Since then she has studied, and continues to study, at various workshops around the world, where she has studied under many well-known artists and teachers. She has also matriculated at Bowling Green and Jacksonville Universities, Bucks County C.C., and Lorain County C.C. Since her first public exhibition in 1991, her acrylics, hand-built pottery, enamels, and watercolors have garnered numerous awards and ribbons. Her work has been exhibited in many juried shows including Artsbridge, Annual show 2006-2007, Phila. Sketch Club 2007, 2008, 2010, Perkins Art Center 2009 and Ellarslie Museum 2010. Rose Marie has also been the subject of many individual shows.
- Melinda Wright
- has studied drawing and painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine arts. She has studied print making and papermaking at BCCC and PAFA. She works now primarily in oil or charcoal. She has lived abroad in England and Japan where she began painting and studying ikebana. Melinda is a founding member of AOY and works extensively with the Pennsbury Prom. She continues to study painting and art history and exhibits regularly in local shows and galleries.
